Dr. Franssen is the interim medical director of CIRO in Horn, the Netherlands, which specializes in treating people with chronic lung diseases such as COPD and asthma, heart failure or sleep-related respiratory distress. He also is a clinical researcher as part of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, and a pulmonologist at CIRO and at the Maastricht University Medical Centre. A Fellow of the European Respiratory Society, he also is a member of the Lancet COPD Commission, the American Thoracic Society, and the Professional Advisory Committee of the European Lung Foundation. He has been a reviewer for more than 30 peer-reviewed journals and is coauthor of more than 150 peer-review articles. He received his medical, master of health sciences and doctoral degrees from Maastricht University.
